Why salaried tenants need rent receipts
If you receive House Rent Allowance (HRA) as part of your salary and you live in rented accommodation, rent receipts are the standard proof your employer asks for before allowing the HRA exemption in your Form 16. Most payroll teams collect them once a year during investment-proof season, and the Income Tax Department can ask for them if your return is picked up for verification. A receipt should carry the tenant's name, landlord's name, property address, rent amount, the month it covers, and the landlord's signature — which is exactly what this generator produces.
All 12 months in one PDF — built for ITR season
Most receipt tools make you fill the same form twelve times. Set the number of months here and you get the full financial year — April to March, one receipt per month, correct dates, in a single PDF you can print, sign, and submit to HR in one shot. No signup, nothing stored on our servers.
The rules worth knowing
- Revenue stamp: required when rent is paid in cash and exceeds ₹5,000 for the period. Paid by UPI or bank transfer? A stamp is generally not needed — but the receipt still is.
- Landlord's PAN: mandatory for HRA claims when annual rent crosses ₹1,00,000. This generator includes a PAN line on every receipt.
- Old regime only: HRA exemption applies only if you opt for the old tax regime. Under the new (default) regime, HRA is fully taxable.
- Receipts + agreement: for larger claims, employers and assessing officers often want a registered or notarised rent agreement alongside receipts.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need rent receipts to claim HRA exemption?
Yes, if you claim HRA exemption under the old tax regime, your employer will typically ask for rent receipts as proof of rent paid — most employers require them for monthly rent above ₹3,000. For annual rent above ₹1,00,000 you must also provide your landlord's PAN.
Is a revenue stamp required on rent receipts?
A revenue stamp is required on rent receipts when rent is paid in cash and the amount exceeds ₹5,000. For rent paid by bank transfer or UPI, a revenue stamp is generally not required. Our generator includes a revenue stamp box you can affix a stamp to when needed.
Can I generate rent receipts for the whole year at once?
Yes. This tool generates up to 12 months of rent receipts in a single PDF — one receipt per month with correct dates — so you can submit the full financial year to your employer or keep it for ITR records in one go.
When is the landlord's PAN required for HRA?
If your total annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000 (about ₹8,333/month), your employer is required to collect your landlord's PAN along with rent receipts. If the landlord does not have a PAN, a signed declaration is typically requested instead.
Is HRA exemption available under the new tax regime?
No. HRA exemption is available only under the old tax regime. If you file under the new (default) regime, HRA received is fully taxable and rent receipts are not needed for tax purposes — though they remain useful as proof of payment.
Do I also need a rent agreement to claim HRA?
Many employers ask for a rent agreement in addition to receipts, especially for higher rent amounts, and it is the stronger document if your claim is ever scrutinised. You can generate a state-specific rent agreement on RentDraft starting at ₹99.
Your HRA claim also needs a rent agreement
Lawyers charge ₹2,000–8,000 for one. RentDraft generates a state-specific, legally formatted agreement in minutes — starting at ₹99.
